E.E. Cummings

Eerder deze week schreef ik al over de mooiste liefdes dichtregels en dat de nieuwe MUGzine als richting een dichtregel had meegekregen van E.E. Cummings (1894 – 1962). Die regel: “it’s always ourselves we find in the sea” komt uit het gedicht ‘maggie and milly and molly and may’ uit 1956. Ik nam de tekst uit The Penguin Poets serie  ‘e.e. cummings selected poems 1923-1958’ gepubliceerd in 1963. Het gedicht is muzikaal, zit vol alliteraties en gaat over het leven en alle emotionele ervaringen die we in het leven hebben maar vooral over verlies en troost.

went down to the beach(to play one day)

and maggie discovered a shell that sang
so sweetly she couldn’t remember her troubles, and

milly befriended a stranded star
whose rays five languid fingers were;

and molly was chased by a horrible thing
which raced sideways while blowing bubbles: and

may came home with a smooth round stone
as small as a world and as large as alone.
