Gedichten voor tuiniers
Poems for gardeners
.
Germaine Greer schrijft in haar inleiding: ‘Marianne Moore said that the poet’s job was to depict “imaginary gardens with real toads in them’. In truth, gardens are always imaginary because they are always the garden that you are aiming for rather than the garden you have, but the toads are real and immediate’.

Cut grass
.
Cut grass lies frail:
Brief is the breath
Mown stalks exhale.
Long, long the death
.
It dies in the white hours
Of young-leafed June
With chestnut flowers,
With hedges snowlike strewn,
.
White lilac bowed,
Lost lanes of Queen Anne’s lace,
And that high-build cloud
Moving at summer’s pace.
