The laughing heart

Charles Bukowski

.

 .

The laughing heart

your life is your life
don’t let it be clubbed into dank submission.
be on the watch.
there are ways out.
there is a light somewhere.
it may not be much light but
it beats the darkness.
be on the watch.
the gods will offer you chances.
know them.
take them.
you can’t beat death but
you can beat death in life, sometimes.
and the more often you learn to do it,
the more light there will be.
your life is your life.
know it while you have it.
you are marvelous
the gods wait to delight
in you.

Yellow Ledbetter

Pearl Jam

.

For the most part the lyrics in this song are irrelevant. The song was written by Mike McCready and Eddie just made up the words as he went along. Eddie’s voice is supposed to be more of an instrument by using improvised words, the words are never the same in concert. Ledbetter refers to Eddie’s friend from Chicago named Tim Ledbetter. If there is any meaning to the lyrics I think the letter in the beginning of the song refers to the telegrams that we sent to the families of soldiers KIA in WWII. The telegrams were so distinct that many families didn’t have to open them to know what they said. In the song I see a family sitting on a porch when a man comes to deliver a telegram and the family is so devestated about their loss that they cannot even bear to open it.

Yellow Ledbetter

Unsealed
On a porch a letter sat
Then you said I want to leave it again

Once I saw him
On a beach of weathered sand
And on the sand I want to leave it again

On a weekend want to wish it all way
And they called an I said an I want what
I said an I call out again

And the reason oughta leave her calm I know
I said I know what I wear that a box or the bag

Oh yeah can you see them?
Out on the porch
Ah, but they don’t wave
I see them
Round the front way, yeah
And I know and I know
I don’t want to stay

Make me cry

I see
I don’t know there’s something else
I want to drum it all away
An I said
“I don’t, I don’t know whether I was the boxer or the bag”

Oh yeah can you see them?
Out on the porch
Ah, but they don’t wave
I see them
Round the front way, yeah
And I know and I know
I don’t want to stay
I don’t want to stay
I don’t want to stay

Ben Ali Libi

Willem Wilmink

.

Our lips raw with love

Charles Bukowski

.

 .

little dark girl with
kind eyes
when it comes time to
use the knife
I won’t flinch and
I won’t blame
you,
as I drive along the shore alone
as the palms wave,
the ugly heavy palms,
as the living does not arrive
as the dead do not leave,
I won’t blame you,
instead
I will remember the kisses
our lips raw with love
and how you gave me
everything you had
and how I
offered you what was left of
me,
and I will remember your small room
the feel of you
the light in the window
your records
your books
our morning coffee
our noons our nights
our bodies spilled together
sleeping
the tiny flowing currents
immediate and forever
your leg my leg
your arm my arm
your smile and the warmth
of you
who made me laugh
again.
little dark girl with kind eyes
you have no
knife. the knife is
mine and I won’t use it
yet.

Tsjebbe Hettinga

Faderpaard

.

Waltzing Matilda

Wasted and wounded
And it ain’t what the moon did
I got what I paid for now
See you tomorrow
Hey Frank can I borrow
A couple of bucks from you
To go waltzing Matilda waltzing Matilda
You’ll go waltzing Matilda with me

I’m an innocent victim
of a blinded alley
And I’m tired of all these soldiers here
No-one speaks English
And everything’s broken
And my strength is soaking away
To go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You’ll go a waltzing Malitda with me

Now the dogs they are barking
and the taxi cab’s parking
A lot they can do for me
I begged you to stab me
You tore my shirt open
And I’m down on my knees tonight

Old bushmills I staggered
You buried the dagger
Your silhouette window light
To go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You’ll go a waltzing Matilda with me

Now I’ve lost my St. Christopher
Now that I kissed her
And the one-arm bandit knows
And the maverick Chinaman
with the cold-blooded sigh
And the girls down by the striptease shows go
Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You’ll go a waltzing Matilda with me

No I don’t want your sympathy
Fugitives say
that the streets aren’t for dreaming now
Manslaughter dragnet
and the ghost that sells memories
Want a piece of the action anyhow
Go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You’ll go waltzing Matilda with me

And you can ask any sailor
And the keys from the jailor
And the old men in wheelchairs know
That Matilda’s the defendant
She killed about a hundred
And she follows wherever you may go
Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You’ll go waltzing Matilda with me

And it’s a battered old suitcase
in a hotel someplace
And a wound that would never heal
No prima donnas the perfume is on
and old shirt that is stained with blood and whiskey
And goodnight to the street-sweepers,
The night watchmen flame-keepers
And goodnight Matilda too
Goodnight Matilda too.

Suzanne Vega

Poëzie in muziek

.

.

Tom’s Diner

I am sitting
In the morning
At the diner
On the corner

I am waiting
At the counter
For the man
To pour the coffee

And he fills it
Only halfway
And before
I even argue

He is looking
Out the window
At somebody
Coming in

“It is always
Nice to see you”
Says the man
Behind the counter

To the woman
Who has come in
She is shaking
Her umbrella

And I look
The other way
As they are kissing
Their hellos

I’m pretending
Not to see them
Instead
I pour the milk

I open
Up the paper
There’s a story
Of an actor

Who had died
While he was drinking
It was no one
I had heard of

And I’m turning
To the horoscope
And looking
For the funnies

When I’m feeling
Someone watching me
And so
I raise my head

There’s a woman
On the outside
Looking inside
Does she see me?

No she does not
Really see me
Cause she sees
Her own reflection

And I’m trying
Not to notice
That she’s hitching
Up her skirt

And while she’s
Straightening her stockings
Her hair
Has gotten wet

Oh, this rain
It will continue
Through the morning
As I’m listening

To the bells
Of the cathedral
I am thinking
Of your voice…

And of the midnight picnic
Once upon a time
Before the rain began…

I finish up my coffee
It’s time to catch the train

Stadsdichters

Avond met stadsdichters Rotterdam en Antwerpen

.

Zie uzelf daar eens liggen, daar beneden, zo licht, gij stuk

brave land bevlekt, zo hard, zo hels, mijn god, gij non

welgemorste mensheid, onbeschaamd schuim
op dit schiftend land, gij onuitwisbare

spat onder stroom.

In woord en gebaar

Tanya Davis

.

.

Hieronder een voorbeeld van één van haar gedichten waarbij ze de volgende aantekening maakte: ‘This poem is for my lovers who were once the suns in my skies: i am sorry that i never ravished you enough and that there is nothing to be done about the passing of time’.

.

Ravish your lover while you still love her

.

Remember your lovers
but, especially, don’t forget them, while they are in your bedroom
with their hair disheveled and their clothes strewn.
notice them as they stand before you
as there they lie,
tell them that you’re touched a thousand times
of every inch take a picture with your unabashed eye
because this will change, as pictures fade, so does love die

Smell your lovers, their wide open skin
like bare shoulders, before toast, in the morning
pheromones will be what you don’t know you miss
when you’re standing beside ex’s
feeling suddenly nostalgic.
Could be soap, could be freshly-washed clothes
most likely it’s the mix of hidden chemicals,
the silent scent
that perfumers will never get
but you will remember it
long after love goes

so hold your lovers close
as you are drifting off, sharing oxygen and oxytocin both
memorize the napes of their necks, the crooks of their wrists, the way their breathing
rises and falls
knees get cuddled only in one kind of spot
and they will miss this once the spoon is gone
like you will miss the puzzle when you don’t get to be a part.
And, so, while you are
with your limbs entangled in ways that warm your heart
remember to notice it
so that the last night doesn’t go by without you noticing
and only in the sunshine do you know these things
while you pine for one more chance to lay with your loved one when night is falling

This is a plea, mostly for me, so I may remember next time I am to be a puzzle piece
also, it is for the lovers I have held and known
who have been my comforts
as well as my abrasions
I remember the days our skin was first waking
and the love we made then
like we were scorched earth
and it was raining.

All I wanna do (is have some fun)

Sheryl Crow en Wyn Cooper

.

.

Fun

“All I want is to have a little
fun
Before I die,” says the man
next to me
Out of nowhere, apropos of
nothing. He says
His name’s William but I’m
sure he’s Bill
Or Billy, Mac or Buddy; he’s
plain ugly to me,
And I wonder if he’s ever had
fun in his life.

We are drinking beer at noon
on Tuesday,
In a bar that faces a giant car
wash.
The good people of the world
are washing their cars
On their lunch hours, hosing
and scrubbing
As best they can in skirts and
suits.
They drive their shiny Datsuns
and Buicks
Back to the phone company,
the record store,
The genetic engineering lab,
but not a single one
Appears to be having fun like
Billy and me.

I like a good beer buzz early
in the day,
And Billy likes to peel the
labels
From his bottles of Bud and
shred them on the bar.
Then he lights every match in
an oversized pack,
Letting each one burn down to
his thick fingers
Before blowing and cursing
them out.

A happy couple enters the bar,
dangerously close
To one another, like this is a
motel,
But they clean up their act
when we give them
A look. One quick beer and
they’re out,
Down the road and in the next
state
For all I care, smiling like
idiots.
We cover sports and politics
and once,
When Billy burns his thumb
and lets out a yelp,
The bartender looks up from
his want-ads.

Otherwise the bar is ours, and
the day and the night
And the car wash too, the
matches and Buds
And the clean and dirty cars,
the sun and the moon
And every motel on this
highway. It’s ours you hear?
And we’ve got plans, so relax
and let us in –
All we want is to have a little
fun.
