Romans

Stevie Smith

.

Tenuous and Precarious

Tenuous and Precarious
Were my guardians,
Precarious and Tenuous,
Two Romans.

My father was Hazardous,
Hazardous
Dear old man,
Three Romans.

There was my brother Spurious,
Spurious Posthumous,
Spurious was Spurious,
Was four Romans.

My husband was Perfidious,
He was Perfidious
Five Romans.
Surreptitious, our son,
Was Surreptitious,
He was six Romans.

Our cat Tedious
Still lives,
Count not Tedious
Yet.

My name is Finis,
Finis, Finis,
I am Finis,
Six, five, four, three, two,
One Roman,
Finis.

Fax poem

Charles Bukowski

.

.

oh, forgive me For Whom the Bell Tolls,
oh, forgive me Man who walked on water,
oh, forgive me little old woman who lived in a shoe,
oh, forgive me the mountain that roared at midnight,
oh, forgive me the dumb sounds of night and day and death,
oh, forgive me the death of the last beautiful panther,
oh, forgive me all the sunken ships and defeated armies,
this is my first FAX POEM.
It’s too late:
I have been
smitten.

Good-night

Percy Bysshe Shelley

.

Good-night

.

Good-night? ah! no; the hour is ill
Which severs those it should unite;
Let us remain together still,
Then it will be good night.

How can I call the lone night good,
Though thy sweet wishes wing its flight?
Be it not said, thought, understood —
Then it will be — good night.

To hearts which near each other move
From evening close to morning light,
The night is good; because, my love,
They never say good-night.

Gregory Corso

32 jaar

.

When I left, I left there a young man, educated in the ways of men at their worst and at their best. Sometimes hell is a good place – if it proves to one that because it exists, so must its opposite, heaven exist” Zijn hemel vond hij in de poëzie.

In 1954 verscheen ‘The Vestal Lady on Brattle and Other Poems’, zijn eerste dichtbundel.

In totaal publiceerde Corso ruim 20 dichtbundels.  Zijn werk droeg hij voor “in his natural voice, a trademark high-pitched “New Yorkese” drawl with subtle undertones of expressiveness.”

Writ On The Eve Of My 32nd Birthday

.

a slow thoughtful spontaneous poem

I am 32 years old
and finally I look my age, if not more.

Is it a good face what’s no more a boy’s face?
It seems fatter. And my hair,
it’s stopped being curly. Is my nose big?
The lips are the same.
And the eyes, ah the eyes get better all the time.
32 and no wife, no baby; no baby hurts,
but there’s lots of time.
I don’t act silly any more.
And because of it I have to hear from so-called friends:
“You’ve changed. You used to be so crazy so great.”
They are not comfortable with me when I’m serious.
Let them go to the Radio City Music Hall.
32; saw all of Europe, met millions of people;
was great for some, terrible for others.
I remember my 31st year when I cried:
“To think I may have to go another 31 years!”
I don’t feel that way this birthday.
I feel I want to be wise with white hair in a tall library
in a deep chair by a fireplace.
Another year in which I stole nothing.
8 years now and haven’t stole a thing!
I stopped stealing!
But I still lie at times,
and still am shameless yet ashamed when it comes
to asking for money.
32 years old and four hard real funny sad bad wonderful
books of poetry
—the world owes me a million dollars.
I think I had a pretty weird 32 years.
And it weren’t up to me, none of it.
No choice of two roads; if there were,
I don’t doubt I’d have chosen both.
I like to think chance had it I play the bell.
The clue, perhaps, is in my unabashed declaration:
“I’m good example there’s such a thing as called soul.”
I love poetry because it makes me love
and presents me life.
And of all the fires that die in me,
there’s one burns like the sun;
it might not make day my personal life,
my association with people,
or my behavior toward society,
but it does tell me my soul has a shadow.

Britney Spears en Alicia Keys

Beroemdheden en poëzie

.

.

Remembrance of who I am

.

“The guilt you fed me
Made me weak.
The voodoo you did
I couldn’t speak.

You’re awakening
The phone is ringing.
Resurrection of my soul
The fear I’m bringing.

What will you say
And what will you do?
She’s not the same person that you’re used to.

You trick me one, twice, now it’s three.
Look who’s smiling now
Damn, it’s good to be me!”

Hieronder het gedicht P.O.W. (Prisoner Of Words unsaid) uit de bundel ‘Tears for water’ (songbook of poems and lyrics) uit 2005 van Alicia Keys.

.

P.O.W.

I’m a prisoner
Of words unsaid
Just lonely feelings
Locked away in my head
I trap myself further
Every time I stay quiet
I should start to speak
But I stop and stay silent
And now I’ve made
My own hard bed
Inside a prison of words unsaid

I am a P.O.W.
Not a prisoner of war
A prisoner of words
Like a soldier
I’m a fighter
Yet only a puppet
Mostly I only say
What you wanna hear
Could you take it if I came clear?
Or would you rather see me
Stoned on a drug of complacency and compromise
M.I.A.
I guess that’s what I am
Scraping this cold earth
For a piece of myself
For peace in myself

It’d be easier if you put me in jail
If you locked me away
I’d have someone to blame
But these bars of steel are of my making
They surround my mind
And have me shaking
My hands are cuffed behind my back
I’m a prisoner of the worst kind, in fact
A prisoner of compromise
A prisoner of compassion
A prisoner of kindness
A prisoner of expectation
A prisoner of my youth
Run too fast to be old
I’ve forgotten what I was told
Ain’t I a sight to behold?

A prisoner of age dying to be young
To my head is my hand with a gun
And it’s cold and it’s hard
Cause there’s nowhere to run
When you’ve caged youself
By holding your tongue

I’m a prisoner
Of words unsaid
Just lonely feelings
Locked away in my head
It’s like solitary confinement
Every time I stay quiet
I should start to speak
But I stop and stay silent
And now I’ve made
My own hard bed
Inside a prison of words unsaid

Strange fruit

Seamus Heaney

.

.

Strange fruit

.

Here is the girl’s head like an enhumed gourd.

Oval-faced, prune-skinned, prune-stones for teeth.

They unswaddled the wet fern of her hair

and made an exhibition of its coil,

let the air at her leathery beauty.

Pash of tallow, perishable treasure:

Her broken noseis dark as a turf clod,

het eyeholes blank as pools in the old workings.

Diodorus Sicilus confessed

his gradual ease among the likes of this:

Murdered, forgotten, nameless, terrible

beheaded girl, outstaring axe

and beautification, oustaring

what had begun to feel like reverence

E-Otoliths

Toby Fitch

.

Harvey bracht twee collecties uit genaamd A Gloucestershire Lad at Home and Abroad’ in september 1916 en Poems from a German Prison Camp in september 1917.

If we return

If we return, will England be
just England still to you and me?
The place where we must earn our bread?
We who have walked among the dead,
and watched the smile of agony,
and seen te price of Liberty.
Which we had taken carelessly
from other hands. Nay we shall dread,
if we return.
Dread lest we hold blood-guiltily
the things that men have died to free.
Oh, English fields shall blossom red,
for all the blood that has been shed,
by men whose quardians are we,
if we return.

Bluebird

Charles Bukowski

.

.

Bluebird

there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I’m too tough for him,
I say, stay in there, I’m not going
to let anybody see
you.
there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I pour whiskey on him and inhale
cigarette smoke
and the whores and the bartenders
and the grocery clerks
never know that
he’s
in there.

there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I’m too tough for him,
I say,
stay down, do you want to mess
me up?
you want to screw up the
works?
you want to blow my book sales in
Europe?
there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I’m too clever, I only let him out
at night sometimes
when everybody’s asleep.
I say, I know that you’re there,
so don’t be
sad.
then I put him back,
but he’s singing a little
in there, I haven’t quite let him
die
and we sleep together like
that
with our
secret pact
and it’s nice enough to
make a man
weep, but I don’t
weep, do
you?

Michael Higgins

President van Ierland en dichter

.

Zijn laatste bundel stamt alweer uit 2011 ‘New and selected poems’.

.

The Prophets are Weeping:

.

To those on the road it is reported that

The Prophets are weeping,

At the abuse

Of their words,

Scattered to sow an evil seed.

Rumour has it that,

The prophets are weeping.

At their texts distorted,

The death and destruction,

Imposed in their name.

The sun burns down,

On the children who are crying,

On the long journeys repeated,

Their questions not answered.

Mothers and Fathers hide their faces,

Unable to explain,

Why they must endlessly,

No end in sight,

Move for shelter,

for food, for safety, for hope.

The Prophets are weeping,

For the words that have been stolen,

From texts that once offered,

To reveal in ancient times,

A shared space,

Of love and care,

Above all for the stranger.
